More than just a KEY

She came through the front door yesterday morning and straight into the kitchen where I was washing dishes. The key hung from one finger on her still small hands. Her braided bracelets sat losely on her wrist and her eyes sparkled! I don't remember the last time her smile was that broad. She has worked and crunched numbers and stressed for the last two months as she saved and made phone calls and contacted utility companies.

That key is a huge representation for her. It is her "freedom."

Freedom from being a child
Freedom from home
Freedom to be an adult
Freedom to set her own hours
to chose her own furniture
her own doormat
her own guests
her own TV shows all the time
her own everything!

It is also the beginning of a new life!
making sure the dishes are done
laundry done
trash carried out
bills paid
lights turned off
thermostat turned down
toilet swished
floor swept
door locked
window closed

Those keys represent wings. She is free to fly and with a tear tears in my eyes flowing, I have to say she's more than earned it! She's such a good "girl!" She's smart, beautiful, funny, creative and her heart is so big it encompasses the whole world.

She still calls to tell me where she is
how she is
what she is doing

She still shares her troubles
her sorrows
her triumphs
her dreams
I hope she never stops!

from 10 to 20 in a blink!

What a lovely post! My daughter is still just 12, but every now and then I catch a glimpse of the woman she's becoming and it is really something else.

Thank you for sharing this!

Thanks Alise! Funny thing was... I wasn't upset when I started the post and somewhere in there I had to stop typing and keep wiping my eyes. It really irritated me! lol
